PAKISTAN CRICKET TEAM SEMI FINAL QUALIFICATION SCENARIO

Pakistan Team needs to bring 1992 Magic Back

And need a lot of Luck on their side!

Pakistan Cricket Team has found themselves in deep trouble when they lost their last game against the arch-rivals India (PAK vs IND) on 16th-June. This high profile game was important for Pakistan in a lot of ways. If we only consider the importance of this game regarding Pakistan’s qualification to the semis, then it was it ! this was the game they had to win to be sure enough to qualify on their own. But as the things turned out to be, now Pakistan has to depend on other team results as well.

This tough will not be the first instance when Team Pakistan has found themselves wanting in such a manner. In fact, they have been in such scenario many a time during their cricketing history and not to our surprise Pakistani Team has come out victorious in numerous occasions. Consider World Cups of 2009 and 1992 for instance. Pakistani Team was actually the underdogs in these tournaments and the start to these tournaments was dreadful by Pakistani Cricket Team. But they did manage to surprise everyone which some magical overnight improvements to their gameplay and also with the heavens in their favor as well.

ICC T20 WORLD CUP 2009

Pakistan cricket team were never the favorites going into the world cup. they lost the first game they played against England and again lost few more games deeming their chances to qualify into the semis. however they really surprised everyone by beating SA in the semis to reach the final. and Pakistan beat sri lanka in a low scoring final and the rest is history.

ICC ODI WORLD CUP 1992

THE 1992 MAGIC PAKISTAN NEED RIGHT NOW!

One name comes to mind whenever we talk about the 1992 world cup and that is “The Great Imran Khan”. his captaincy genius and heroics with the bat for Pakistan made the definitive difference in the end but it wasn’t so easy for Pakistan to qualify into the finals or the Semi-Finals even. The Term “Cornered Tigers” was introduced by the great Imran Khan when his team lost the initial matches and had to win all their matches and then pray for the west indies match to go into their favor. this seemed almost impossible however nothing is impossible in this world and everyone was taken to surprise when Pakistan improved their performance overnight and delivered some hefty punches to the stronger oppositions and the heaven also played their part for them to qualify into the semi-finals.

ALSO READ: SCENARIOS HOW PAKISTAN CAN QUALIFY TO SEMIS

Pakistan with only 3 points after 5 matches are now in the exact same scenario as they were in the world cup 1992 which they went on to win eventually. They had to win all their matches and then It also depended on the results of other teams. Now Pakistan also have to win their matches against New Zealand, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and South Africa. Also England has to lose atleast 3 matches out of their 4 so Pakistan can qualify comfortably into the finals. If we talk about cricket this seems ever so impossible right now. but as the word goes, Nothing is impossible.

The Great Imran Khan always says ” You don’t lose until you think you lose”

Let’s see what happens in the coming games and if Pakistan really are up to the task and can bounce back like once they did in the past in 1992 world cup.

What do you think about it? can Pakistan Bounce back as a Team? comment below.

FOUR! Andile Phehlukwayo to Kane Williamson. Slower ball half volley, outside off stump on the front foot Steer, past third man for 4 runs. Kane Williamson hits a four down to third man to win the game for New Zealand, what a game and what an innings from the captain. After a slow first innings with the bat South Africa came out all guns blazing in the 2nd innings with Rabada dismissing Munro early on. After three quick wickets between the 16th and 18th over South Africa were right back in the competition. However de Grandhomme came to the crease later on in the innings and smashed 60 off 47 balls, but found himself caught in the deep in the 47th over. Then up steps Kane Williamson with 12 needed off just 7 balls Williamson steered a four past the keeper then belted a six into the stands before cutting again past point for another boundary to win the game for New Zealand. Another great game between two fantastic sides but yet again it is New Zealand who come out on top

WI vs PAK

Pakistan vs West Indies

2nd Match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019

Pakistan and West Indies will be fighting their first battle against each other in the ICC mega event today on 31-May at Trent Bridge Nottingham. This will be the first outing for Men in Green and the Carabian team in this ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

WARM-UP MATCH RESULTS

If we talk about the Warm Up matches of both teams, Pakistan could only play one Warm-up match against the new Afghanistan team which came out rather as a shocker for the men in Green as they lost to Afghanistan team by 3 wickets. The second warm-up game against Bangladesh was washed away by rain.

West Indies, on the other hand, had an amazing warm-up game against the good looking team New Zealand where WI scored a massive total of 421. and to no surprise won the match comfortably at the end.

West Indies and Pakistan are the two teams which are tagged as the “unpredictable”. that’s what makes PAKvWI exciting to watch. You just never know what could come out of them. On their day they can blow away any side and they can also be very disappointing on a given day as well. Both teams have this surprise element attached to them which makes them exciting to watch. Pakistan and West Indies both have talented players who can jolt the opposition in any condition so this PAK vs WI has to be a close contest many suspects.

Lets take a closer look on what history brings to the table about the two sides.

PAK vs WI HEAD TO HEAD STATS and FIGURES

Total MatchesWon by PakistanWon by West IndiesTiedNo Result
133607030

If we look at the ODI stats of PAKvWI games, then there is not so much to choose from. West Indies may be leading by 10 matches but this total number does include the golden times when WI team was a nightmare for any opponent and they were at the top of their game in the ’70s and ’80s. Recently Pakistan had a better going against the Windies in the shorter format.

Everyone wants the win their first match of this big tournament and set the mood for them in the rest of the world cup thus we can surely expect one hell of a match tomorrow. let see it Pakistan has some answers to the unstoppable WI batsmen who are scoring big recently, and likewise, we will see if WI are able to play the surprising and very capable Pakistan bowling attack.

PROBLEM WITH PAKISTAN ODI TEAM

Pakistan is 6th in One Day Internationals ranking, but they have been stuck around rank 5th (in ODI) since long time, why aren’t they improving? What is the reason they are not doing well in ODIs, They are the No.1 T20 side, so aren’t they suppose to have good players in the bank?
All these questions are answerable but first we need to dig down deep to get to the problem with Pakistani ODI Team.

Pakistan Cricket has been up and down since they started playing international cricket back in November 22, 1935- (wikiPedia) , and has been the same as during the famous ICC-Champions-Trophy Final, England’s Nassir Hussain comments ” ONE MINUTE DOWN NEXT MINUTE UP, PAKISTAN CRICKET AT ITS BEST”.
Currently, Pakistan is 7th on ICC Test Rankings, 6th on ICC ODI rankings, and 1st on ICC T20 Ranking, but apart from ODIs PAKISTAN has been up and down in other formats, Pakistan did claim the ICC TEST MAZE in 2017 during the reign of Misbah ul Haq. So why is that Pakistan is every stuck on the last few spots in ODIs only? let us take a look at some reasons.

ALWAYS SHAKY STARTS:

Let’s face it Pakistan in this day and age does not have a Rohit Sharma or a Hasim Amla as openers so yes the options have been limited lately there are no consistent Openers in the arsenal like Saeed Anwar or Amir Sohail.
So what is there a shortage of talent? Obviously not! One thing about Pakistan cricket everyone will agree upon is that they have loads n loads of talent. Talent like Sharjeel, Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman have come along in the past few years but as the development part is what Pakistani openers are lacking. They are simply not consistent enough. Every now and then a new opening pair is tested and the newcomers are simply too cautious to play freely and hence the low Scoring rates in Powerplays.
Pakistan scores an average of

TeamRR since 2012
Australia7.2
India6.94
West indies6.5
Sri Lanka6.3
Pakistan6.13

Since 2012 Pakistan has been scoring with 6.13 RR and if you consider the recent years Pakistan drop to 7th position. This is one clear indicator that the Game is gaining pace and Pakistan is not keeping up with it.
Here one can say if its only the batting that’s letting Pakistan down? well, the answer might be YES.

Batting Averages Current Players:

Pakistan's Current player's Batting Stats
Pakistan Batsmen Batting Stats (Source: ESPNCRICINFO.com)

Here in the above Stats image the green ones are the Players playing the current series between PAKISTAN and AUSTRALIA in UAE. If we take a look at their strike rates then apart from the New Edition Asif Ali and Imad Wasim there is simply no one with an impressive SR in ODIs. these two are used in the death overs with fewer deliveries to play with.

THE OLD GAME-PLAY THAT ONCE WORKED !

Today’s Cricket is a Fast, Six hitting, quick striking, unorthodox stroke making Cricket. But Pakistan seems to be stuck with the OLD formula of 90’s which was “Save wickets in the start score in the last Ten”. And that just simply does not work or should we say is not enough by today’s Game Standards. Teams today more often than not are regularly striking the 300 Mark and beyond. However, Pakistan’s Old obsolete approach does not allow them to hit that mark too easily.

The above Graphic tells us that Pakistani Cricket Team scored high enough in just nine occasions since 2015. With the exception of 2 matches, all of the rest are against lesser teams. and for the record, the recent high scoring match between PAKvSA was actually lost by Pakistan due to DRS in a rain-affected match as SA was scoring at a better rate. The other one being the Champions Trophy final against India in Oval.

THE BIG CONCLUSION HERE

Obviously one would ask that is it the batting only that is letting Pakistan down? well, the hard truth is Yes! All the Stats shown above clearly show that Pakistan’s bating is simply following the old formula that is not workable any more in the modern cricket and with the ICC WORLD CUP around the corner Pakistan needs to change this. They have no shortage of talent but that talent needs to have the game awareness and Play the modern game with the modern spirit. The Strike rate of the players needs to go up and the dot balls played needs to come down. If Pakistan keeps their current slow and steady approach then one would say that there are very slim chances of them getting close to anywhere in the top 3 Teams in the ICC Rankings.
